Sat 2 - Sun 3 March

Grand Opera of Belarus
SHOW INFORMATION

The National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus is one of the three theatres in former Soviet Union to receive the status ‘Bolshoi’. The theatre opened its doors in 1933 and rapidly developed an outstanding reputation for quality and professionalism. The theatre repeatedly went on tour to the most prestigious stages in the former USSR including, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Successful tours in 1940 have brought the theatre an honorary title ‘Bolshoi’ (translated ‘Big’) and in 1964 the title of ‘Academic’.
This season Grand Opera of Belarus brings to you Puccini’s Madam Butterfly and La Boheme. Both tragic stories are favourite operas and are performed for a large, live orchestra.
SAT 2 MARCH
Puccini’s La Boheme is a passionate story of love at first sight. Set in 19th century Paris, it tells a story of love between Mimi and Rodolfo and their friends. The young, struggling artists face the hardships of relationships and life. They soon realise that love cannot conquer all. La Boheme is one of the world’s most loved operas, a classic story that never ceases to captivate its audience.
SUN 3 MARCH
Madam Butterfly is the magnificent story of a trusting Japanese maiden that catches the attention and affections of an American officer. In order to become his bride she must cross cultural boundaries and defy the will of her family. Alone, she faithfully awaits his return.  However, she has a serious dilemma at her hands. Madam Butterfly is a deeply tragic and gripping opera that will truly affect its spectator.
